Current Mexican vehicle license plates

Current Mexican car license plates (or vehicle registration plates) since June 2016 vary in their characters depending on the type of vehicle and in their design depending on the state. Despite this, all Mexican license plates share some similarities, as you can see below. The size of Mexican vehicle license plates is the American standard of 300 x 150 millimeters. Mexican vehicle license plates display REAR / T or FRONT / F depending on whether the plate is used on the front or rear of the car or vehicle. All cars, buses, trucks, tow trucks and tractor-trailers in Mexico must use two license plates, while motorcycles, trailers, semi-trailers and converters use only one on the rear. What is the alphanumeric configuration of Mexican license plates?

The character configuration of Mexican vehicle license plates varies depending on the state, as explained in detail below. In general, Mexican license plates display three letters first for ordinary private passenger vehicles, followed by a series of three or four numbers. The letters I, Ñ, O and Q are not used on Mexican license plates. Since 2016, a new letter has been added at the end of the numbering, allowing the registration system to remain in use for many more decades. Baja California license plate between 2020 and 2022

Baja California vehicle license plates between 2020 and 2022 used a design with a burgundy or brown band at the bottom, separated from the rest by a golden line. The top of the vehicle license plate displayed BAJA CALIFORNIA and Gobierno del Estado, while the bottom displayed 02 Baja California México.

Baja California Sur car license plate

Baja California Sur car vehicle license plates have displayed the name of the Mexican state Baja California Sur at the top on a green background since 2022. Baja California Sur license plates since 2022 feature a green band with an indication on the left of whether it is the front (F) or rear (T) license plate. The top of Baja California Sur license plates displays an outline map of the state of Baja California Sur. A QR code is also displayed at the top, with the vehicle type centered, such as TRANSPORTE PRIVADO AUTOMÓVIL. Baja California Sur is usually represented by the number 03.

Campeche car license plate

Campeche license plates since 2023 use a white design with black characters and a colorful design at the bottom. The bottom of the Campeche license plate displays the vehicle type, for example TRANSPORTE PRIVADO DE AUTOMÓVIL. The top displays the Campeche logo with the slogan PURO AMOR and the government logo CAMPECHE Gobierno del Estado. Campeche license plate from 2014 to 2016

Between 2014 and 2016, Campeche vehicle license plates used a very colorful design, with the state name CAMPECHE at the top of the license plate. Below the name Campeche, the slogan ¡Quiero Estar Ahí! was displayed in red. The bottom of the Campeche license plate until 2016 displayed a series of traditional houses from the state. The state number associated with Campeche, 04, was also displayed.

Chihuahua car license plate

Current Chihuahua automobile license plates since 2022 are characterized by blue characters on a white background. Old Chiapas license plates until 2024

Old Chiapas vehicle license plates from 2020 to 2024 have black characters on a white background. The name of the state CHIAPAS is displayed at the bottom of the car license plate, as well as at the top. The state of Chiapas is assigned code 07 on some license plate designs.

Mexico City CDMX car license plate

Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and has commonly been abbreviated as CDMX since July 2016. Until then, the entity was Mexico DF (Federal District). The name change also affected the designs of the license plates used. Since 2019, Mexico City CDMX license plates have displayed CIUDAD DE MÉXICO and the vehicle type at the bottom. The state number, 09, is displayed on the left. Mexico City has no connection with the license plates of the State of Mexico EDOMEX. Mexico City CDMX is assigned code 09 on some license plate designs.

2026 FIFA World Cup license plates

At the end of 2025, an optional design for 2026 FIFA World Cup car license plates was presented for Mexico City. These license plates can have three designs: white, yellow or black backgrounds. These special license plates can only be used by automobiles, not motorcycles. The current Mexican Hidalgo car license plate since 2023 uses black characters on a white background. The top of the Hidalgo license plate displays the name HIDALGO and the state logo, while the bottom features a dark red band with local designs in dark red and the name HIDALGO. Jalisco car license plate

Mexican Jalisco automobile license plates since 2019 use black characters on a white background. The top displays a design with natural motifs and a statue. A QR code, the Mexican coat of arms, the Jalisco coat of arms and the name MÉXICO are also displayed. The state of Jalisco is assigned code 14 on some license plate designs.

State of Mexico EDOMEX car license plate

The State of Mexico has no connection with Mexico City regarding its license plates. The State of Mexico surrounds Mexico City to the north, east and west. State of Mexico (Edoméx) vehicle license plates have used a design with a burgundy lower background since 2024. A stylized hummingbird is displayed on the plate background. The top displays "ESTADO DE MÉXICO ¡El poder de servir!" and a QR code.

Old Edomex license plates until 2024

Ordinary automobile license plates from the State of Mexico since 2018 display the state's official abbreviation at the top of the plate. The abbreviated name of the State of Mexico is EDOMEX, which is also displayed at the top of the State of Mexico license plate. The bottom features a design based on the official state logo. The current Mexican Oaxaca license plate since 2018 uses black characters on a white background. The top of Oaxaca license plates displays a design with several drawings in various colors, the Oaxaca coat of arms and the name MÉXICO. The bottom of the Oaxaca license plate displays the state name Oaxaca with the X in striking colors. The state of Oaxaca is assigned code 20 on some license plate designs.

Puebla car license plate

Current Puebla car license plates since 2020 use black characters on a white background. The bottom of the Puebla license plate displays the state name PUEBLA. The top displays the text "Gobierno de Puebla" and the state slogan "Hacer historia, hacer futuro". The state of Puebla is assigned code 21 on some license plate designs.

Querétaro car license plate

Current Querétaro license plates since 2022 use black characters on a white background. At the top and bottom of Querétaro license plates there are semi-bands in dark blue with several gray dots. Current Mexican license plates from the state of Quintana Roo since 2023 use black characters on a white background. Quintana Roo license plates display the Quintana Roo logo at the top and a repeating Maya design at the bottom. The state of Quintana Roo is assigned code 23 on some license plate designs.

San Luis Potosí car license plate

Current Mexican license plates from the state of San Luis Potosí since 2022 use black characters on a white background. The top displays the state name SAN LUIS DE POTOSÍ in green, while the bottom displays a location within the state and the text HUASTECA POTOSIANA. The state of San Luis Potosí is assigned code 24 on some license plate designs.

Sinaloa car license plate

Sinaloa car license plates since 2020 use black characters on a white background. The bottom of Sinaloa license plates displays the state name SINALOA and its coat of arms in red. The name MÉXICO is also displayed in red. The top of the Sinaloa license plate displays the vehicle type and the outline of the Sinaloa map in gray on a brown background. From 2020 to 2021, the map was not displayed, but the Sinaloa state coat of arms was. The state of Sinaloa is assigned code 25 on some license plate designs.

Sonora car license plate

Current Sonora license plates since 2022 use black characters on a white background. The top displays the state name SONORA and a blue design. The bottom of the Sonora license plate displays a series of drawings identifying Sonora, such as a bighorn sheep, a whale tail and a desert landscape. The state of Sonora is assigned code 26 on some license plate designs.

Tamaulipas car license plate

The Mexican car license plate from the state of Tamaulipas since 2023 uses black characters on a white background. The top displays the Tamaulipas state logo and name. The bottom of the Mexican Tamaulipas license plate features a red and yellow band with the state name Tamaulipas in white. The state of Tamaulipas is assigned code 28 on some license plate designs.

Tlaxcala car license plate

Current Mexican car license plates from the state of Tlaxcala since 2023 use black characters on a white background. The top of the Tlaxcala license plate displays the state logo and coat of arms together with the state name Tlaxcala. The bottom of the current Tlaxcala license plate features a pink and violet band with the name Tlaxcala in white and the state number, 29. The state of Tlaxcala is assigned code 29 on some license plate designs.

Veracruz car license plate

Current vehicle license plates from the state of Veracruz since 2019 use black characters on a white background. The top of the Veracruz license plate displays the state name VERACRUZ and the bottom displays the state logo and the name Veracruz. Below this is the Veracruz slogan ME LLENA DE ORGULLO and the vehicle type, such as TRANSPORTE PRIVADO AUTOMÓVIL. Next to the vehicle type, the Veracruz license plate always displays the number 30, identifying the state of Veracruz. The state of Veracruz is assigned code 30 on some license plate designs.

Yucatán car license plate

Yucatán has used several license plate designs over the years. In its old official car license plates, the state of Yucatán has used a design or direct reference to the Mayan pyramids located in Yucatán. In general, the Mayan pyramid of Chichén Itzá is represented on old Yucatán license plates. The Mexican Yucatán vehicle license plate from 2009 to 2013 displayed the Chichén Itzá Mayan pyramid as the background of state license plates. The state number, 31, was also displayed at the bottom left of the license plate. The name MÉXICO was displayed at the top of the license plate.

Zacatecas vehicle license plate

The state of Zacatecas has used several license plate designs over the past few years. In 2022, the state of Zacatecas introduced a new Mexican license plate design with the arrival of a new governor. The bottom of the license plate displays the state's most emblematic hills, Sombretillo, Tetillas, Proaño and La Bufa. The larger hill shown in the foreground, with a cross at the top, is La Bufa. The colors used on the Mexican Zacatecas license plate are the same as those used in the new coat of arms. This license plate has been used since 2022 and is expected to remain in use until at least 2017. The state of Zacatecas is assigned code 32 on some license plate designs.

Private transport motorcycle license plates

Motorcycles use plates measuring 215 x 134 millimeters and a different configuration from the other license plate types, including special and public service license plates. For private transport motorcycles, two possible systems are used for each state, consisting of one letter, two numbers and two letters (Aguascalientes example: N01AA to N52LZ) and one letter, one number, two letters and one number (Aguascalientes example: A1AA1 to A9TL9). In Mexico City, the blocks G01AA to G99ZZ, Z04AT to Z51MW, 1A1AA to 5M4MM and F1TW1 to G9MZ9 are used.

Special license plates for private transport in Mexico

The different types of special vehicles traveling on Mexican roads use different license plate configurations.

Mexican truck license plates

Trucks use a configuration of two letters, four numbers and one letter, separated by hyphens. The letters used identify the state. Mexico City uses license plates from A-001-AA to Z-999-ZZ. Example: AA-1234-A

Mexican bus license plates

Mexican buses use a registration system different from other license plates. They use a configuration of two numbers, a hyphen, three letters, a hyphen and two numbers. The letter series used identifies the state. Mexico City uses configurations from 01-AA-1 to 99-ZZ-9. Example: 01-AAA-01

Mexican trailer license plates

Mexican trailers use license plates different from other Mexican special plates. These plates consist of one number followed by two letters, a hyphen, three numbers, a hyphen and one letter. The letters used identify the state. Mexico City uses the configuration A-1A-01 to Z-9Z-99.

Special public service license plates

In addition to the special vehicle license plate types mentioned above, for trucks, buses and trailers, there are many different special plates for public service vehicles since 2016. In many cases, the letters used refer to the state. Taxis use plates with the A-001-AAA configuration, where the last three letters identify the state, ranging from A-001-www to Z-999-www. Commercial trucks use the 1-AAA-01A format, where the first three letters identify the state. Federal District

Mexico's capital, Mexico City (8.8 million inhabitants), has used this name since 2016 and normally displays the CDMX combination on its license plates. It was previously Mexico Federal District. In terms of license plates, Mexico City has always used numbering and configurations different from those of the other states. This also applies to public service vehicles. Commercial trucks and buses use license plates consisting only of two blocks of numbers, from 500-001 to 650-000 for trucks and from 650-001 to 850-000 for buses. Trailers use numbers from 850-001 to 999-999.

Mexico City taxi license plates

Mexico City taxi license plates have a different configuration and are associated with the iconic pink taxis. On the rear side of the vehicle, the license plate is displayed on a vinyl sticker that must be clearly visible, although this is not always the case. Free-route taxis use plates from L-0001-A to L-9999-Z. Site-based taxis use plates starting with S (S-0001-A). Fixed-route taxis use plates from 001-A-001 to 999-Z-999. With the recent conversion of some taxis to electric vehicles, plates with a configuration from E-0001-A to E-9999-Z have been added for electric taxis, displaying a green leaf on the left side. The bottom of taxi license plates displays an image of the pink Diana the Huntress.

Public service motorcycle license plates

Local public service motorcycles use two series systems. For example, the first configuration runs from AA1AA to AR9BA and provides 66,870 combinations per state, while the second runs from 1AAA1 to 9ACZ9 with 5,589 combinations. Mexico City uses plates from EX1JJ to GF9VT.

Other types of special license plates in Mexico

In addition to the special license plate types already mentioned, Mexico uses other types of plates for other types of vehicles. Escort vehicle license plates begin with the letters ESC.

Electric vehicle license plates - Eco-friendly automobile

Eco-friendly automobiles use plates with distinctive combinations consisting of two numbers and one letter followed by a hyphen and three numbers, including Mexico City, which uses plates from 97E-001 to 49H-999.

Historical vehicle license plates in Mexico

Historic vehicles use a series configuration throughout Mexico, with different blocks for each state. The configuration consists of two letters, one number and one letter, starting from FA-1-A to GL-9-Z for Baja California. The hyphen may not be displayed between the last two characters. The left side of the plate displays an image of an early 20th-century vehicle. Mexico City uses configurations from 1AA-01 to 9CL-99.

Metropolitan public transport license plates

Metropolitan public transport buses use plates with distinctive combinations. The configuration consists of three numbers, two letters and three numbers separated by a hyphen.

License plates for disabled drivers / people with disabilities

These license plates are issued in blocks of 30,096 according to the state, consisting of two numbers, a hyphen and three letters, from 01-AAA to 99-APE for Aguascalientes. Mexico City uses 01-A-01 to 99-Z-99, displaying the international wheelchair symbol in white on a blue background in large characters on the right side of the plate.

Dealer and demonstration license plates

Dealer license plates use a 1-AA-01A configuration, issued in blocks according to the state, and range from DM-AA-1 to DM-ZZ-9 in Mexico City.

Ambulance license plates

Ambulance license plates begin with the letters AM-, followed by three numbers, a hyphen and two letters, with different series for each state. For example, Mexico City uses plates from AM-720-HP to AM-469-JP.

Firefighter license plates

Firefighter license plates begin with the letters BM-, followed by three numbers, a hyphen and two letters, with different series for each state. For example, Mexico City uses plates from BM-720-HP to BM-469-JP.

Civil Protection vehicle license plates

Civil Protection vehicle license plates consist of two numbers, a hyphen, the letters PC, another hyphen and three numbers, issued in blocks of 999 according to the state. Those assigned to national coordination begin with 00. These plates have two grey bands, one at the top and one at the bottom. The organization's emblem is displayed in the upper right. Mexico City uses the block from 09-PC-001 to 09-PC-999.

Motorcycle license plates

Motorcycle license plates for testing and demonstrations use plates beginning with Y and a configuration of Y, three numbers and two letters, issued in blocks to each state (example: Y001DA). Mexico City uses plates from Y001AA to Y999CZ.

Federal Motor Transport Service license plates

Federal Motor Transport Service license plates vary according to their intended use and whether they are for a motor unit, trailer, passenger transport or tourism vehicle, as shown in the following table. Parcel and courier services use 01D-1AA to 99E-9MM, vehicles for people with disabilities use 001-D to 999-Z, omitting I, Ñ, O and Q. Towing and rescue vehicles use 01-LE-1A to 99-LE-9Z. National transport uses 01-A1-AA to 99-C9-ZZ, economic and mixed passenger transport uses A-0001-F to Z-9999-F, and inspection of federal communication routes uses AD-01 to AZ-99. Dolly converter plates use D-00-001 to D-30-000, always beginning with the letter D. Plates for vehicle manufacturer diagnostic vehicles range from VE-A001 to VE-Z999. Finally, national motorcycle transport uses MT001A to MT999Z.

On the rear side of the vehicle, the license plate is displayed on a vinyl sticker that must be clearly visible, although this is not always the case. Free-route taxis use plates from L-0001-A to L-9999-Z. Site-based taxis use plates starting with S (S-0001-A). Fixed-route taxis use plates from 001-A-001 to 999-Z-999. With the recent conversion of some taxis to electric vehicles, plates with a configuration from E-0001-A to E-9999-Z have been added for electric taxis, displaying a green leaf on the left side. The bottom of taxi license plates displays an image of the pink Diana the Huntress.

Public service motorcycle license plates

Local public service motorcycles use two series systems. For example, the first configuration runs from AA1AA to AR9BA and provides 66,870 combinations per state, while the second runs from 1AAA1 to 9ACZ9 with 5,589 combinations. Mexico City uses plates from EX1JJ to GF9VT.

Other types of special license plates in Mexico

In addition to the special license plate types already mentioned, Mexico uses other types of plates for other types of vehicles. Escort vehicle license plates begin with the letters ESC.

Electric vehicle license plates - Eco-friendly automobile

Eco-friendly automobiles use plates with distinctive combinations consisting of two numbers and one letter followed by a hyphen and three numbers, including Mexico City, which uses plates from 97E-001 to 49H-999.

Historical vehicle license plates in Mexico

Historic vehicles use a series configuration throughout Mexico, with different blocks for each state. The configuration consists of two letters, one number and one letter, starting from FA-1-A to GL-9-Z for Baja California. The hyphen may not be displayed between the last two characters. The left side of the plate displays an image of an early 20th-century vehicle. Mexico City uses configurations from 1AA-01 to 9CL-99.

Metropolitan public transport license plates

Metropolitan public transport buses use plates with distinctive combinations. The configuration consists of three numbers, two letters and three numbers separated by a hyphen.

License plates for disabled drivers / people with disabilities

These license plates are issued in blocks of 30,096 according to the state, consisting of two numbers, a hyphen and three letters, from 01-AAA to 99-APE for Aguascalientes. Mexico City uses 01-A-01 to 99-Z-99, displaying the international wheelchair symbol in white on a blue background in large characters on the right side of the plate.

Dealer and demonstration license plates

Dealer license plates use a 1-AA-01A configuration, issued in blocks according to the state, and range from DM-AA-1 to DM-ZZ-9 in Mexico City.

Ambulance license plates

Ambulance license plates begin with the letters AM-, followed by three numbers, a hyphen and two letters, with different series for each state. For example, Mexico City uses plates from AM-720-HP to AM-469-JP.

Firefighter license plates

Firefighter license plates begin with the letters BM-, followed by three numbers, a hyphen and two letters, with different series for each state. For example, Mexico City uses plates from BM-720-HP to BM-469-JP.

Civil Protection vehicle license plates

Civil Protection vehicle license plates consist of two numbers, a hyphen, the letters PC, another hyphen and three numbers, issued in blocks of 999 according to the state. Those assigned to national coordination begin with 00. These plates have two grey bands, one at the top and one at the bottom. The organization's emblem is displayed in the upper right. Mexico City uses the block from 09-PC-001 to 09-PC-999.

Motorcycle license plates

Motorcycle license plates for testing and demonstrations use plates beginning with Y and a configuration of Y, three numbers and two letters, issued in blocks to each state (example: Y001DA). Mexico City uses plates from Y001AA to Y999CZ.

Federal Motor Transport Service license plates

Federal Motor Transport Service license plates vary according to their intended use and whether they are for a motor unit, trailer, passenger transport or tourism vehicle, as shown in the following table. Parcel and courier services use 01D-1AA to 99E-9MM, vehicles for people with disabilities use 001-D to 999-Z, omitting I, Ñ, O and Q. Towing and rescue vehicles use 01-LE-1A to 99-LE-9Z. National transport uses 01-A1-AA to 99-C9-ZZ, economic and mixed passenger transport uses A-0001-F to Z-9999-F, and inspection of federal communication routes uses AD-01 to AZ-99. Dolly converter plates use D-00-001 to D-30-000, always beginning with the letter D. Plates for vehicle manufacturer diagnostic vehicles range from VE-A001 to VE-Z999. Finally, national motorcycle transport uses MT001A to MT999Z.

Police use different series blocks depending on the state, with a configuration of AA-123A-1 for automobiles and AA12A for motorcycles. The individual letter used on the right side of the numbering identifies the vehicle type. A for auxiliary, T for Traffic, E for state police... The Federal Police uses plates with a PF-00001-A configuration, always beginning with PF.
