Matriculasdelmundo.com is a website designed to facilitate the search for car and motorcycle license plates from all over the world, by country, and specifically from Spain. The Matriculasdelmundo project is the result of a love for geography and cars. The website has been created with great attention to detail by its administration. The sources consulted for this project are countless, as can be seen in each section. Thank you to all the readers for dedicating your time to us. Over time, I have been able to publish the first book about car license plates in Spain in 2022 and have even had the opportunity to discuss this hobby on radio thanks to RTVE.

My passion for license plates stems from my love for geography. License plates are not just an administrative element; they are also a piece of a city or country, its culture, and its geopolitical context. (To learn more about this, I recommend visiting the maps section of matriculasdelmundo). Thanks to my deep interest in geography, I always associated each license plate with a place, wanting to discover more details about those locations. For example, a car with a Rome license plate is not just another car to me; it’s an incentive to learn about Rome’s history, its map, main streets, most famous monuments, and probably hours of research about Italy, Rome, and the whole context of why it’s "ROMA" and not "RO".
This is why I want to make it easier for those looking to find out where a particular license plate is from. The world of car license plates is vast, even if it might not seem so at first glance, and this is precisely why matriculasdelmundo.com exists.
14 years and 8 months (+2 years as Todoatlas), the Matriculasdelmundo.com project began by modifying the section dedicated to it on todoatlas.com, being fully migrated in August 2010 to Matriculasdelmundo.com after several years of data collection. Since then, the site has undergone several changes that have been documented in the official blog.
The data provided about car, motorcycle, airplane, and boat license plates have been verified and updated on multiple occasions over the past decades. They have also been used by various organizations, both national and international, notably appearing in movies and television programs (such as Antena 3) and radio (Rtve), as well as in university projects. One of the most recently created sections is the ability to create your own miniature license plates, frequently used by collectors from different parts of the world, and representing years of detailed work.
Are you perhaps wondering what the Matriculasdelmundo.com website looked like in the past? If so, here is a small table where you can see, through images, how Matriculasdelmundo has evolved from 2009, when it was still Todoatlas, to 2025.
2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 |
2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 |
2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 |
The website and its sections hold various interesting curiosities worth discovering or spending a few minutes exploring. For instance, you can travel around the world by clicking on "related territories" within each country. You can also create license plates with more digits than allowed in the license plate creator by accessing directly via the URL. Some of the license plates displayed are photographs, while others are carefully handcrafted.
The site features thousands of images of license plates from cars, motorcycles, airplanes, and boats from all over the world, with several countries having more representation, including Spain, France, Germany, and Poland. However, among these more than 2,500 photos and images, some license plates hold special significance for one reason or another.
The first license plate on the website was taken in France, in the department matching its number. Thanks to this plate, my initial interest began with French license plates, which quickly expanded to other countries and territories around the world.
This is one of the plates I enjoyed photographing the most. It’s not every day you see cars from China, so spotting this one was one of the best moments in terms of seeing the farthest license plate in my life.
This was another fascinating license plate to see. It was photographed in León, Spain, and I was fortunate to speak with its owner, who shared his interest in the long journey undertaken. This is a historic vehicle license plate from the state of Victoria, Australia.
The logo of the website also holds some interesting meanings. The design is based on a California license plate, displaying the website’s creation date, September 2010, in the upper right corner. The lower part shows the date the logo was created, 2017. Finally, in the upper left corner, there is an image of an antique car, which is used on Polish license plates for historic vehicles.
