Current Transnistria Car License Plates
Since approximately 1995, the Moldovan territory of Transnistria (or Transdniestria) has used its own car license plate system. Transnistria car license plates have standard European dimensions of 520 x 112 millimeters. The license plate configuration is X 000 AA. The flag can be seen on the left side of the license plate, with a hologram used until 2016 at the bottom, followed by a vertical black line and the license plate configuration. The first letter on Transnistrian license plates identifies the region. This is followed by three numbers and two letters.
The capital of Transnistria, Tiraspol, begins with T, or H in the case of a motorcycle. See all codes. The letters used on license plates are only those that are written the same way in both Latin and Cyrillic (A, B, C, E, H, K, M, P, T, X and Y). Although Transnistria does not have an official international recognition code because it is recognized as part of Moldova (MD), the letters PMR (Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica) are commonly used as the international identification code for Transnistria. Transnistria license plates cannot be used in any European country, with the exception of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, as they are not recognized by them, although Ukraine now also prohibits their use (see neutral license plates). These vehicles are also permitted to circulate in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Other Types of Special Transnistria License Plates
There are other types of license plates in Transnistria. The police in Transnistria uses its own system, consisting of black characters on a blue background. Trailers have a square license plate showing the letters from the end of the registration at the top, followed at the bottom by the regional code and numbering.
Agricultural vehicles still use the same system as in the Soviet Union, with the corners, in this case the lower corners, cut off, and beginning with the district code and the letter A. Personalized license plates are permitted, but only with Cyrillic characters and without the possibility of leaving the territory.
Neutral License Plates for Transnistria and Travel Abroad
On September 1, 2018, a new registration system was created for Transnistrian vehicles travelling abroad. This followed Ukraine's announcement that it would stop allowing vehicles with ordinary Transnistrian license plates to circulate.
With these new neutral license plates, it is possible to travel through any foreign country. The format consists of three letters and three numbers in black on white, with a black border and without displaying any type of emblem or coat of arms of the territory. Alongside the license plate, it is mandatory to display Moldova's oval code, MD, as well as on the vehicle registration document. These license plates are temporary and are issued by the relevant authority in the cities of Tiraspol or Rîbnița (Ribnitsya). See the news details.
Transnistria Diplomatic Corps License Plates
Transnistrian diplomatic license plates have blue characters on a white background, beginning with the letters CD, followed by three numbers identifying the country (or territory) and finally two serial numbers.
