Current Serbia Car License Plates in Detail

Current Serbia car and motorcycle license plates, used since January 2011, follow the European standard of 520x110 millimeters, with black characters on a white background. Serbia license plates do not have a Euroband because Serbia is not part of the European Union. However, Serbia license plates have a blue strip on the left displaying the international code SRB. This is followed by two letters identifying the region in Latin characters. The Serbian coat of arms is then displayed, with the regional code written in Cyrillic characters below it. Finally, Serbia license plates display 3 numbers and 2 letters in sequence, progressing from 001 to 999, beginning with 001AA, 001AB, 001AC and continuing up to 999ZZ. A fourth number was added in 2018 after 999ZZ was reached, resulting in 1000AA, 1000AB... Click to see all Serbian regional license plate codes below.

Serbia Diplomatic Corps License Plate

Current Serbia diplomatic corps license plates use yellow characters on a black background. They have a “PP-L-NNN” configuration, where L represents letters, N represents numbers, and “PP” represents the country, which has a code reserved for each country. The city where the vehicle is based is shown on the left side of the plate (for example “BG” for Belgrade), while the expiration date is shown on the right. The “L” can identify several different types of diplomatic license plates: -A is a diplomatic vehicle, -M is a non-diplomatic mission, -P is a press company and -E is for foreign commercial missions and their representatives. Diplomatic license plates with the letter E usually have a yellow background instead of black. If accompanied by “CMD”, it identifies a Head of a Diplomatic Mission, while “CD” identifies the Diplomatic Corps. See all diplomatic codes below.

Before the adoption of the current Serbia license plate system in 2011, several different types of license plates were used. The old vehicle registration system in Serbia consisted of a white plate with black characters. It began with the provincial code followed by three numbers separated by a hyphen from another three numbers.

After 2008, 18 new city codes were added to the list of regions used during the period of Serbia and Montenegro (SCG).

Old Serbian diplomatic license plates were already in use during the period of Serbia and Montenegro and even Yugoslavia. These license plates were also used in Montenegro after its independence. These plates displayed the location on the left side, indicating the city where the consulate or embassy was located. The first block of numbers identified the country or organization. The following letter identified the diplomatic status. They were used until January 2011.
