Current Guam License Plate System
Guam license plates have used the standard American format since 1960, closely resembling the license plates used in many U.S. states. They measure 300x150 millimeters (mm) and are made of aluminum. Every few years, the character configuration, colors, and registration stickers displayed on the Guam car license plate have changed.
Since 2009
The latest update took place at the end of February 2009, when a system consisting of two letters followed by three to five numbers was introduced. The first two letters identify the municipality. The characters are black on a white background, with an image of a bougainvillea between the letters and numbers. The bottom of the plate also displays the text "TANO Y CHAMORRO". Since the previous system was introduced in 1994, the name of the territory, "GUAM U.S.A.", has been displayed at the top. The first two letters may be HG for the capital Hagåtña, BR for Barrigada, and so on. Personalized license plates are permitted and may display up to 7 characters.
Motorcycle license plates begin with the letter M followed by up to five numbers. Trailer plates reverse the position of the numbers. Government license plates, in use since 1993, use a different configuration, with black characters on a yellow background. They begin with the Guam seal, as Guam does not have an official coat of arms, followed by a combination of numbers, with the text "GOVERNMENT" (Government) at the top and "OF GUAM" (of Guam) at the bottom. Police vehicles use license plates beginning with the letters GPD (Guam Police Department).
1993-2008
Guam license plates from January 1993 to 2008 used a configuration of three smaller letters followed by 3 or 4 serial numbers in black on white, with a yellow map of the island centered on the plate. Deedo plates used three numbers and one letter. The combination of three letters at the beginning identifies the municipality. From 1983 to 1986, Guam license plates used blue characters on a white background, with serial numbers from 1 to 99999 and an ox-drawn cart in the lower-left corner.
