Current Thailand License Plate System
Current Thailand license plates have been in use since 1997. They measure 340x155 mm and feature two Thai letters identifying the type of vehicle, followed by four digits. The full name of the province is displayed at the bottom, also in Thai (See all codes). These Thailand car license plates are issued by the Ministry of Transport. The color combination used on the plate identifies the type of vehicle. The standard system uses black characters on a white background. Vehicles traveling to Malaysia must carry license plates with Latin characters. Since 2004, the background of the license plates has been offered for sale, allowing different types of designs to be displayed on the background.
Other Types
Military license plates have white characters on a black background. They can feature four different types of emblems representing the different branches of the armed forces (air, land, navy and combined). Temporary license plates have black/white characters on a red background.
The Thai Royal Family has its own license plate system, beginning with ร.ย.ล. (รถยนต์หลวง = royal vehicle) followed by a number. These plates may have white characters on black or black characters on white.
Diplomatic Corps
Thai diplomatic license plates use the old system (before 1997), with white characters on a blue background. In the upper-left corner, a letter identifies the type of diplomatic vehicle: ท-Diplomatic Corps, ก-Consular Corps, อ-International Organization. Below this letter, two numbers identify the embassy to which the vehicle belongs, with 27-France, 67-Portugal, 73-Spain and 86-United States. On the left side of the license plate, four numbers are displayed, separated from the previous information by a hyphen. These numbers identify the type of personnel associated with the vehicle, with 0001 assigned to the ambassador's vehicle.
