Current Moroccan Car License Plates from 2026

Since August 3, 2026, Morocco has used a new unified car license plate design, valid both for domestic circulation and travel abroad. The new Moroccan license plates feature a retroreflective white background and black characters. On the left side, the international country code MA (MOROCCO in English) is integrated into the plate itself. This means that the new design can be used both inside the country and abroad without requiring a separate international license plate, as was the case until August 2026. The change was established by Decision No. 640.26 of the Minister of Transport and Logistics.

The new Moroccan license plate consists of four main parts. From left to right, it includes the country's international code, MA (Morocco in English), a serial number starting from "1", the letter in Arabic and Latin characters, and the prefecture or province code. The letter consists of an Arabic character accompanied by its Latin equivalent. The serial number can reach 99,999. In addition, the plate finally incorporates the MA identifier as an international identification mark for Morocco.

New Moroccan License Plate Sizes

The new regulations establish the dimensions of Moroccan license plates. The single-line license plate measures 520 × 110 millimeters, while the two-line license plate measures 300 × 210 millimeters. The MA identifier integrated into the plate measures 46 × 40 millimeters. These dimensions are part of the technical specifications established for the new Moroccan vehicle license plate model.

Moroccan License Plates from 1999 to 2026

Ordinary Moroccan license plates used between 1999 and 2026 had a white background with black characters and dimensions very similar to those used in Europe, measuring 520 × 110 millimeters (mm). Moroccan long license plates measured 498 × 110 mm, while tall plates measured 300 × 150 mm. Two numbers appeared on the right side of the plate, representing the province where the vehicle was registered. Further to the left, there was an Arabic letter. At that time, only the letters A (أ), B (ب), D (د), H (ﮪ), E (و) and T (ط) were used. On the far left, a series of up to five serial numbers was displayed. The design of Moroccan license plates may vary, showing a map on the left side, text along the bottom, or even slightly different lettering from the usual format. From 1983 to 1999, the previous system was used.

What Are Moroccan License Plates Like When Traveling Abroad?

According to international traffic conventions and agreements governing travel in Europe, license plates using letters or characters from alphabets other than the Latin alphabet, such as those used in most European Union countries, must use Latin characters when traveling through Europe. As Morocco uses the Arabic characters described above, special license plates have been introduced displaying the same letter in both alphabets. Although these plates should be more common, they are still relatively rare. However, since October 2022, Moroccan license plates displaying letters in both alphabets have become increasingly common. In any case, when traveling to any foreign country with a Moroccan vehicle, it is necessary to display the oval country code with the letters MA in black on a white background alongside the license plate at the rear of the vehicle. These plates continued to be issued for new vehicles until July 31, 2026. Vehicles that were already using them before that date could continue using them until December 31, 2026. The new license plates issued from August 2026 are already valid for travel abroad.

In some cases, buses operating international routes, especially in Europe, have been seen with the letters MA on the left side of the license plate, acting as an oval country code. However, this is not a valid practice, and the oval code with the letters MA is still required despite this.

Moroccan License Plates for Trailers

Trailers weighing more than 750 kg use a distinctive license plate. This plate has white or gray characters on a red background. It consists of four serial numbers, a hyphen, and the two-digit regional code.

Temporary Moroccan License Plates

Temporary Moroccan license plates use black characters on a white background. These plates have a series of up to six numbers ending in the letters WW. They are valid for a maximum of two months and are made on a license plate rather than on a sticker. If the characters are red and a single letter W is followed by the number 18, the plate identifies a dealer license plate. In this case, the first number identifies the last digit of the year in which the plate was issued. For example, 2021 would be represented by 1, 2022 by 2, and so on.

Moroccan Collector Vehicle License Plate

In addition to all the types mentioned above, Morocco has a separate license plate system for collector vehicles. Moroccan collector vehicle license plates use the standard registration format, but on the right side, in blue Arabic characters, they display the words "Collector Vehicle" سيارة تحفة.

Moroccan Diplomatic Corps License Plates

Since 2022, Moroccan Diplomatic Corps license plates have featured black characters on a blue background. Until 2022, they used a yellow background with black characters. Two or three letters appear on the left, depending on the type of diplomatic representative. They may be CD ھ‌د (Diplomatic Corps), CC ھ‌ق (Consular Corps), CMD ر‌ب‌د (Head of Diplomatic Mission), PAT م‌ا‌ت (Administrative Technician), or OI م‌د (International Organization). The country name "Maroc" appears below these letters. On the right side of the plate, the same information is displayed in Arabic: المغرب (Morocco) below, with the diplomatic category letters above. A black stripe separates these two sections, and two groups of numbers separated by a hyphen appear in the middle. Finally, the vehicle registration date is displayed. The second group of numbers identifies the country to which the vehicle belongs. Until 2022, tax-free vehicle license plates used the letters CI and were very similar to Diplomatic Corps plates, making them easy to confuse.

Moroccan PAT Diplomatic License Plate

Since 2022, Moroccan diplomatic license plates for administrative technicians have used black characters on a blue background. These plates have a different background color from Diplomatic Corps plates with the CD code in order to prevent confusion. Information about the color used since 2022 is quite limited, but the system works in the same way as Diplomatic Corps plates, displaying on the right side of the plate the year in which the vehicle was probably registered or the year in which the plate is valid. Both the yellow-background design and the blue-background design used since 2022 display the letters PAT م‌ا‌ت on Moroccan administrative technician plates. As with CD plates, the second group of numbers, meaning the first group when counting from the right on PAT plates, identifies the country or territory.

Moroccan RT License Plate for Temporary Regime Vehicles

Moroccan license plates with the letters RT identify vehicles under the Temporary Regime (Régime temporaire). These plates completely replaced the CI license plates, which were fully discontinued in 2022. These plates retain a yellow background because they are NOT diplomatic license plates. However, Moroccan RT plates had already been in use since at least 2009. The last two numbers on Moroccan RT plates identify the registration date. The letters RT appear in the upper-left part of the license plate, while ﻡ ﻥ appears in the upper-right part.

License Plates for Tax-Free Vehicles Until 2022

From 2000 until September 2022, Morocco used a special license plate reserved for tax-free vehicles. These plates were almost identical to diplomatic license plates, but began with the letters CI (Coopération internationale - International Cooperation) and did not have diplomatic status. These plates were replaced by the RT letters (Régime temporaire - Temporary Regime). The configuration of tax-free vehicle license plates consisted of up to four serial numbers from 1 to 9999, followed by a hyphen and two numbers. The two numbers on the right side of the plate identify the year in which the plate was registered. Moroccan CI license plates were reserved for owners with permanent residence outside Morocco whose activities were related to cooperation with Morocco. On the right side of the Moroccan license plate, ت‌د was displayed above المغرب (Morocco).

Previous Moroccan License Plate System

From 1983 to 1999, Morocco used a system that looked visually similar to the current one, but worked differently. The license plates had a design similar to the European plates used at that time. They consisted only of black numbers on a white background. The format included a number of up to four digits, a hyphen, a number identifying the city, a vertical line, and another number indicating the geographical area where the vehicle was registered. The plates had this format: 1234-5|2. Once 9999 was reached, an additional number was inserted immediately before the vertical line: 1234-51|2.
