What are current Luxembourg license plates like?

Since July 2003, Luxembourg car license plates have used a 520x110 mm format with black characters and border on a yellow background, displaying the EU band on the left with the country code L. The format consists of two letters followed by four numbers, omitting the letters I and O. In addition, some combinations are reserved, such as AA for official vehicles. (see license plates between 1974 and 2003 or license plates before 1974.)

This is how current Luxembourg license plates work

Vehicles that used the previous system may reissue their license plates using the current design, that is, keeping the old number but using the current plate format. License plates are issued to the owner and not to the vehicle, so plates may be used on more than one vehicle, but both vehicles may not circulate at the same time.

Personalized Luxembourg license plate

The National Society of Automotive Traffic can provide personalized license plates, also available through the MyGuichet.lu website. The configuration is usually two letters and four numbers that have not yet been used below 4000, although plates may also consist of only 5 or 4 numbers. Four-digit combinations are usually more difficult to obtain, with long waiting lists before one becomes available. Motorcycle license plates may also be personalized.

Previous Luxembourg license plate system until 2003

From 1974 to 2003, Luxembourg car and motorcycle license plates used black characters on a yellow background. In 1988, plates were extended to reach the European standard. From that date, the European Union flag was also added on the left side of the license plate. The configuration consisted of one or two letters followed by four or three numbers, such as AA222 and A2222. In addition, all these vehicles had to display the oval country code with the letter L on the rear, in black on a white background.
